Preparing you to experience Mother Nature like never before…
All About 51° South:
About the Author:
51° South started with just me; Abby. I’m an Iowa girl with VERY broad horizons and an affinity for all of Earth’s wide open spaces. I’ve spent 5 years of my life traveling the world working on billionaire’s super yachts, and now I travel on my own terms. Of all the places I’ve been, nothing hit me quite as hard as Patagonia (its also where my fiance proposed to me -YAY!- , but that’s another topic). It’s raw, untamed, prehistoric beauty and fascinating local culture will forever hold the most special place in my soul, and I’ve decided to do my best to share that same feeling with as many people as possible through helping navigate the unique challenges that traveling Patagonia brings.
What is 51° South?
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you’ve wanted to visit Patagonia your whole life. Maybe you just started thinking about it recently. Maybe you’re confused about this site because you’re trying to buy a sweater and instead you ended up here. Wherever you are in the process of planning, its my job to answer your questions and provide information every step of the way to make your trip as successful as possible. Feel free to drop me a line on the contact page, and check back often, as new insights, tips and articles are being posted all the time!
What’s with the name?
For those of you not familiar with navigation, the entire world is split into a precise grid enumerated by GPS coordinates. The grid is measured in degrees, minutes, seconds, and so on. Latitudes are measured in degrees from the equator and designated by North or South based on which hemisphere you are referring to. Longitudes are measured in degrees from the Prime Meridian and are designated by East or West. Torres del Paine National Park in Chile is located at almost exactly 51° South. And although I can’t pick a favorite, of all the places I traveled in Patagonia Torres del Paine was one of the best.
Do you have guides for any other places?
Yes!…soon. Because you can fill a whole blog with nothing but information on Patagonia (obviously), I’ve decided to start with this. However, you can expect to see information on the US Pacific Northwest, Coastal California, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Germany, The British Virgin Islands (and other Caribbean islands), and much more very soon!
Are you affiliated?
Yes. We earn a small commission on some of the products we recommend on this site. And on others, we don’t. At 51° South, we are committed to making sure that you have the right gear and resources to make your travels a success regardless of whether or not we are earning a commission. We strive to always be the most reliable source of information, so if we find a product that we love, we are going to tell you about it! It’s that simple.
Can you get involved?
Absolutely! If you like what you see, please share our information on your own social media or blogging platforms. Also, I am always looking for top-notch creative masterminds to design our campsite merch, so if you’re an epic, freelance graphic designer, please get in touch!
